CORTICEIRA AMORIM is promoting recycling of cork stoppers in Portugal.
The first trees identified as Cork Oaks occurred millions of years ago.
With design and an investment in innovation, cork is used today in the manufacture of clothing, furniture, in decoration, amongst many other singular applications and with more yet to be discovered.
Cork stoppers are 100% recyclable and can be reused in the manufacture of other products other than closures.
Only after the 3rd harvesting, when the Cork Oak is around 40 years of age, does cork obtain the indispensable quality needed for the production of cork stoppers.
The first harvesting only takes place when the tree reaches 25 years of age.
The Cork Oak has along lifespan, living on average more than 200 years.
The montados form cultural landscapes – that is, systems that resulted from human activity for the utilization of diverse resources: cork pastures and agricultural cultivations.
The cork oak contributes to the survival of many native species of fauna, some of which are threatened with extinction.
Over 100,000 people depend on cork production and its manufacture.
